Description
This is a reproduction of “Nude in the Academie” of 1896 by J. C. Leyendecker. The artist was born in Germany in 1874 and was brought to Chicago by his family when he was eight years old. After completing his first commercial commission, he began studying at the Chicago Art Institute after which he studied at the Academie Julian in Paris. This masterpiece was created while he was in Paris. He returned to Illinois in 1899 and began his forty-four year old relationship with the Saturday Evening Post in that year. He obtained commercial commissions from many magazines and advertisers and virtually began the industry of commercial illustrations. His career began to decline in the 1930’s by which time his long time companion Charles Beach began to isolate Leyendecker increasingly from public contact. Leyendecker died on July 25, 1951. This masterpiece is in a private collection. A reproduction is available as an oil on canvas measuring 15 by 20 inches.
