Description
This is a reproduction of the “Scene at the Palaistra” by Epiktelos of Athens from about 515 BCE. His active career lasted for thirty years until 490 BCE. He signed about half of his works which began with bilingual eye-cups. He became a master of painting inside of cups, a technique known as tondo. He prepared scenes from life rather than mythological motifs and included erotic depictions. He was very popular as is attested by the survival of works that were fraudulently ascribed to him. This particular piece of pottery is in the Louvre in Paris.
